Feel the Speed – Triathlon coaching by former professional triathlete Richard Westover.

About me

I am a coach in triathlon and endurance sports and have been coaching for around 8 years now.

I’ve been involved in endurance sports for most of my life and have spent well over a decade as a professional triathlete.

I came from track & field and cross country running, to cyclo-cross and road cycling before finding my way to triathlon. After 3 years as an amateur and qualifying for Kona, I took my professional licence focusing primarily on middle distance triathlon, but I have raced across all distances from sprint to full ironman over the last 15 years.

Now I coach a small number of athletes who I really enjoy working with. My goal is to be able to offer a very personal approach and really coach the individual. My main motivation is for working closely with the athlete and helping them reach their potential while balancing the demands of everyday life.

I work with athletes who are committed to their long term development. Where they currently are when they come to me however, is not important.

I coach athletes from a wide range of backgrounds and with a variety of goals in the sport, from complete beginners to seasoned racers.

What matters to me is their commitment to work on their craft. This doesn’t mean an expectation to dedicate their entire life to sport, because this is not healthy or sustainable. Just that there is the curiosity and willingness to progress.

My role is to understand each athlete, unlock their potential, and guide their development in a way that fits their individual circumstances.

Approach

I offer one straightforward monthly all-inclusive price for coaching services to all athletes, with no hidden fees or minimum contract requirements. No gimmicks, no limits on contact time, and no rigid packages.

Collaboration and adaptability are at the core of my approach. The aim is to get the most out of each day — whatever that day brings.

There is always an ongoing dialogue between us and this allows me to continue refining your plan and ensure that we are heading in the right direction.

We work together to ensure that the training is effective in providing the correct stimulus at the correct time, is enjoyable for you to be able to follow consistently and offers the variety needed to develop into a strong, well-rounded and adaptable athlete.

My background

Coaching started quite naturally for me — while still competing myself, I began helping friends with their training and specific areas that they wanted to progress, such as open water swimming, to see if it was something I’d enjoy as a potential future career. I found these to be rewarding experiences and it has developed and expanded from there.

During the additional downtime early in the covid pandemic I began studying and educating myself to formalise becoming a coach, spent time speaking with established coaches, and took my first qualification with the British Triathlon Federation.

I have found that I have a very broad range of real-world experience in the sport to draw on, and this has been a major strength in being able to provide support and guidance in a range of situations for a variety of athletes.

This day to day process with athletes, guiding them through the difficult times and achieving breakthrough performances, is the most enjoyable part of coaching for me.

    Ich trainiere seit diesem Frühjahr mit Richard. Im Winter habe ich den Sport für mich entdeckt, kam jedoch mit den Online Trainingsplänen nicht richtig klar, da ich beruflich viel Reise. Mit Richard zusammen zu arbeiten, hat genau den erhofften Fortschritt gebracht. Mit den wöchentlich individuell abgestimmten Plänen konnten wir das Training und meinen Außendienst unter einen Hut bringen und durch die manchmal täglichen Austausche gibt er mir den benötigten Tritt, um von der Couch aufzustehen.

    I started working with Richard beginning of 2024. After three pregnancies I felt the urgent need to get fit again. Though running had never been a passion of mine it seemed the only sport that I could squeeze into my work/family life. We started off with short sessions that quickly turned into the training for a 10km run, which I thought I would never survive 😉
    At the beginning of each week, Richard asks me about my availability and designs the training sessions accordingly. In the time I have been writing with Richard, I have not had a single injury and broke personal records I had never even imagined. Richard is certainly responsible for getting me addicted to running. 🙂

    Richard ist seit einigen Jahren mein Trainer.
    Als wir angefangen haben zusammen zu trainieren, war ich eine Hobbyläuferin, die nicht schwimmen (kraulen) konnte und trotzdem gerne mal einen Triathlon absolviere wollte. Nach ein paar erfolgreichen Jahren auf der OD und Sprint Distanz mit zahlreichen Podiumsplätzen, habe ich mit Richards Unterstützung, genau auf mich zugeschnittenen Trainingsplänen und sehr gutem Kraultraining, an meiner ersten Mitteldistanz (IM 70.3 Kraichgau) teilgenommen und bin direkt in die Top 9 meiner AK gelaufen.

    Dank seiner ausgeglichenen und ganzheitlichen Trainingsmethoden war ich in den ganzen Jahren verletzungsfrei und bin mit viel Freude und top vorbereitet bei den Wettkämpfen angetreten.

    Ich kann Richard als Trainer ausdrücklich empfehlen, da er wirklich den Fokus darauf setzt mittel- und langfristige Erfolge zu erzielen und seine Athleten nicht frühzeitig zu verbrennen. Wir stehen immer in einem sehr engen Austausch, wodurch er auf Motivationstiefs eingehen und ggfs. den Wochenplan anpassen kann.

    Nach einer Babypause bin ich nun dabei mit Richards Hilfe wieder fit zu werden und freue mich auf die nächsten Erfolge.
